He is a Fellow of the IEEE and has received many awards on his theoretical and applied research on control systems. He has written numerous papers and has authored more than 10 books on control systems. He has consulted extensively in industry.
New To This Edition

Upgraded ACSYS software– the unique graphical interface of ACSYS enables students to apply MATLAB to control problems more intuitively.  This means they spend less time programming and more time applying concepts and evaluating results.

- SIMLab and Virtual Lab applications – enable students to work on realistic problems and conduct speed and position control labs in a software environment.
SIMLab enables students to see system parameters and alter them (as in any simulation).  This lets them observe concepts in action and practice with “what-if” scenarios of their own.

Virtual Lab introduces a black-box approach, where the students have no access to the plant parameters and have to use some sort of system identification technique to find them. In Virtual Lab, students have a realistic experience of the types of problems they would encounter in a real speed- or position-control lab, for example, amplifier saturation, noise, and nonlinearity.

•     Additional MATLAB toolboxes and case studies in almost every chapter
•     A sample section-by-section one-semester syllabus is given in the Instructor’s Manual on the Instructors BCS. The manual also contains detailed solutions to all the problems in the book.

Foreword

The first edition of the Drilling Data Handbook was published in 1950.

Over the more than six following decades the book has been constantly improved, adding lots of new technologies and equipment over the course of its eight updated editions.

But its key principle is to remain familiar and friendly to users.

Its philosophy has always been to give quick access to the basic information or calculations for the office or field operations. That is why our primary goal is to select and highlight the most important data, charts and formulas. The Drilling Data Handbook combines international and field units for the benefit of a majority of industry professionals from different technical cultures.

The success of past editions, along with the continued demand for updated information, have encouraged us to publish this new paper edition. A large number of field personnel have confirmed that they do use the Drilling Data Handbook as their primary reference, now in combination with electronic documents and the internet. This edition refreshes and updates data and references from the eighth edition, and also provides even more information.

We hope that you will enjoy the ninth edition, our finest ever.

Gilles GABOLDE and Jean-Paul NGUYEN

PRESS REVIEWS

- "This is a small, strongly-bound, user-friendly compendium packed with useful information for those involved in drilling. The paging is notched and externally labelled alphabetically to allow quick access. It represents a big advance on the previous edition"(AMF Alert, April 2000)
- "Useful information which might not be easily available on all rigs includes data on mechanical properties of large diameter pipes (risers and conductors), rig hoisting equipment, drilling turbines, positive displacement mud motors and hydraulic pressure drop calculations. There are useful tables comparing cement additives from various vendors. Comprehensive tables on hubs, flanges and BOP (blow out preventer) operating parameters are also included. (...) Overall, this useful book is aimed at operations using SI units. It is less useful for operations using Imperial (Oilfield) units, though extensive conversion factors are given.(International Mining & Minerals, volume 2, n°22, October 1999)v
- "La nuova edizione del Drilling Data Handbook era necessaria per riflettere i cambiamenti che vi sono stati nelle tecniche di perforazione nel corso degli ultimi dieci anni. Nuove specifiche e raccomandazioni sono state pubblicate dall'American Petroleum Institute. Inoltre, i produttori hanno anche migliorato i loro prodotti. In particolare sono stati fatti notevoli progressi nei seguenti campi;
- gli spostamenti orizzontali hanno raggiunto distanze fino a 10 km nella perforazione direzionale e orizzontale, con l'utilizzo di apparecchiature di perforazione più complesse;
- unità del tipo "coiled" vengono utilizzate sistematicamente, occasionalmente anche nella foratura;
- sono stati modificati i valori degli Used Bit Dull Gradin System Format and Codes dell'IADC;
- sono comparsi nuove dimensioni e pesi (foratura HP-HT);
- gli equipaggiamenti di controllo sono stati modificati per tenere conto delle necessità della foratura off-shore.

Overview

Aims and Scope

Glass shapes architecture, offering architects scope for playing with the relationship between “inside and outside” and how people relate to space and nature. It influences interior light and warmth, offering special spatial atmospheres and views. Glass needs other materials to hold, carry and support it, so using it requires an integrative approach involving various disciplines. Good glass architecture is the result of a successful interaction between design, technology, construction and implementation. Depending on its composition, glass appears transparent or translucent, coloured or clear.

Best of Detail: Glass combines highlights from DETAIL and DETAIL green on the topic of glass, transparency and translucence. Starting with fundamental questions, the book offers a theoretical basis, details on many practically implemented projects, and plenty of inspiration and examples of successful structural solutions.

Overview

- Examples of general features of glassy materials
- Theoretical and experimental how the glass
-forming process effects the glass properties
- Highly important classes of glass-forming systems and how their treatment leads to desired properties

Aims and Scope

This work demonstrates how general features of glasses and glass transition are exemplified in different classes of glass-forming systems, such as silicate glasses, metallic glasses and polymers. In addition, the wide field of phase formation processes and their effect on glasses and their properties is studied both from theoretical and experimental points of view.

For these purposes, overviews on technologically highly important classes of glass-forming systems are presented, their technological treatment allowing one to reach the desired properties, theoretical approaches in the description of structure-property relations and new concepts in the theoretical treatment of crystallization of glass-forming systems.

This CD contains all current TAPPI Standards (Official Test Methods, Provisional Test Methods, Classical Methods, Standard Practices, Guidelines, Specifications, and Glossaries), Technical Information Papers (TIPs), and Useful Methods (UMs).

The Standards include approximately 240 documents that have been developed and reviewed by TAPPI Standard-Specific Interest Groups. For easy reference, included is a search engine, reference materials list, test equipment suppliers, a supplier directory, safety sources, test laboratories and research facilities.

It also includes hundreds of Technical Information Papers (TIPs) on papermaking, pulping, engineering, and corrugated containers topics. This specialized information includes technical data, calculations, resource information, recommended practices, glossaries, guidelines, and bibliographies for use in the manufacture of paper and related products. This revised collection is essential for every mill, converting plant, research institution, and technical center in the pulp, paper, and corrugated containers industry.

As an added benefit, the CD now contains Useful Methods (UMs). These methods describe tests, procedures, or practices written in the same general style as a TAPPI Standard Test Method, but with minimum precision requirement. UMs do not receive the same review through a consensus process, and thus are not Standards, but are used often in the industry as quick plant floor methods..

The CD-ROM includes numerical and subject indexes.

Standards, TIPs and UMs CD-ROM is an individually licensed product and access is restricted to one user. It is a copyright violation to share information beyond the primary user.
