Cutter-Sanborn Three-Figure Author Table (Swanson-Swift Revision); 1969 34p. [ISBN 0-87287-210-6]

ISBN 0-87287-210-6
1969
34p.

Originally devised by C.A. Cutter, these tables provide a commonly used method for arranging books by author within a given class. Thousands of libraries use one of the three Cutter Author Tables. The tables, as revised in 1969, appear in a new typeface with the letters and figures to be used printed in boldface type. Rearrangement into a single, consecutive alphabet makes each table easier to use. These editions may be employed in conjunction with earlier editions because individual letter and figure combinations have not been changed. However, the Cutter-Sanborn Table cannot be used in conjunction with any Cutter-Two-or-Three-Figure Tables as it is based on an entirely different selection of authors' names.

Cutter-Sanborn Three-Figure Author Table (Swanson-Swift Revision); 1969 34p. [ISBN 0-87287-210-6]

This table uses entirely different combinations of a single letter and figures. It cannot be used in conjunction with the other two tables.

This example, again uses the classification number 940.54 and the same four authors, indicate how the four books would be marked using the Cutter-Sanborn Three-Figure Author Table.

AACR2 - Código de Catalogação Anglo Americano. 2ª Edição - Revisão 2002. (ISBN: 978-85-85024-04-8 FEBAB); (ISBN: 978-85-7060-289-3 Imp.Oficial); [Em Portugues]

Em Portugues
ISBN: 978-85-85024-04-8 FEBAB
ISBN: 978-85-7060-289-3 Imp.Oficial

2009 | Hardcover
ISBN 978-3-598-24282-3
Series: IFLA Series on Bibliographic Control 34

This book represents an important part of the extension and expansion of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records. It contains an analysis of attributes of various entities that are the centre of focus for authority data (persons, families, corporate bodies, works, expressions, manifestations, items, concepts, objects, events, and places), the name by which these entities are known, and the controlled access points created by cataloguers for them. The conceptual model describes the attributes of these entities and the relationships between them.

INTERNATIONAL ZOO YEARBOOK : RESEARCH IN ZOOS : VOLUME 45 / 2011

The need to understand the biology of wildlife is becoming ever more urgent. The IUCN has indicated that between 10 and 30% of animal species are threatened with extinction and suggested that living collections are and should be in the forefront of conserving them. A key requirement for successful species conservation is conservation-related scientific research.

Opportunities to carry out research in zoos and aquariums are expanding rapidly but they are not as widely known nor as widely used as the urgency and size of the conservation challenge demands. This issue of the International Zoo Yearbook has been designed to present examples and give encouragement in this respect by surveying the state of the art of conservation-related research as it applies to vertebrate and invertebrate animals currently held by, or that may in the future need to be kept in zoological collections and aquariums.

The volume’s first section surveys new strategies of cooperation with Academic Institutions, on a large and small scale—all effective. Examples of ways to understand better the welfare of our animals are illustrated from a global to a quarantine-pen size perspective. This issue also focuses on one aspect of reproductive biology, cryopreservation, to bring a more general awareness of the current status of the technology as it applies to the ‘Frozen Ark’. Two topics of rapidly expanding interest complete this volume. The first explores the pathological and saprophytic micro-organisms in zoological collections and reveals a world barely glimpsed until now, where basic biological, biomedical, epidemiological or veterinary viewpoints will be constructive. The last topic attends to the need to understand the foundation of our conservation efforts—demography and population genetics. New ways of thinking are being generated here.

Is There A Santa Claus? Papai Noel existe? - Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday's to all our readers!!!

Editorial do The Sun, 1897

Meu pai costuma falar: “Se estiver no The Sun, então será verdade.” Por favor, me diga a verdade, Papai Noel existe?

Virgínia O’Hanlon

Resposta do The Sun:

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

Editorial Page, New York Sun, 1897

We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O'Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a sceptic al age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus? Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

From The People's Almanac, pp. 1358-9.

Francis P. Church's editorial, "Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus" was an immediate sensation, and became one of the most famous editorials ever written. It first appeared in theThe New York Sun in 1897, almost a hundred years ago, and was reprinted annually until 1949 when the paper went out of business.

Thirty-six years after her letter was printed, Virginia O'Hanlon recalled the events that prompted her letter:

"Quite naturally I believed in Santa Claus, for he had never disappointed me. But when less fortunate little boys and girls said there wasn't any Santa Claus, I was filled with doubts. I asked my father, and he was a little evasive on the subject.

"It was a habit in our family that whenever any doubts came up as to how to pronounce a word or some question of historical fact was in doubt, we wrote to the Question and Answer column in The Sun. Father would always say, 'If you see it in the The Sun, it's so,' and that settled the matter.

" 'Well, I'm just going to write The Sun and find out the real truth,' I said to father.

"He said, 'Go ahead, Virginia. I'm sure The Sun will give you the right answer, as it always does.' "

And so Virginia sat down and wrote her parents' favorite newspaper.

Her letter found its way into the hands of a veteran editor, Francis P. Church. Son of a Baptist minister, Church had covered the Civil War for The New York Times and had worked on the The New York Sun for 20 years, more recently as an anonymous editorial writer. Church, a sardonic man, had for his personal motto, "Endeavour to clear your mind of cant." When controversial subjects had to be tackled on the editorial page, especially those dealing with theology, the assignments were usually given to Church.

Now, he had in his hands a little girl's letter on a most controversial matter, and he was burdened with the responsibility of answering it.

"Is there a Santa Claus?" the childish scrawl in the letter asked. At once, Church knew that there was no avoiding the question. He must answer, and he must answer truthfully. And so he turned to his desk, and he began his reply which was to become one of the most memorable editorials in newspaper history.

Church married shortly after the editorial appeared. He died in April, 1906, leaving no children.

Virginia O'Hanlon went on to graduate from Hunter College with a Bachelor of Arts degree at age 21. The following year she received her Master's from Columbia, and in 1912 she began teaching in the New York City school system, later becoming a principal. After 47 years, she retired as an educator. Throughout her life she received a steady stream of mail about her Santa Claus letter, and to each reply she attached an attractive printed copy of the Church editorial. Virginia O'Hanlon Douglas died on May 13, 1971, at the age of 81, in a nursing home in Valatie, N.Y.

Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - ISSN: 1808-8694 - Volume 77 - 2011

ISSN 1808-8694 printed version
ISSN 1808-8686 version online

Volume 77 - 2011

Owing to its rich scientific content and feature of interesting articles, BJORL has a fascinating history. It is this history that challenges us. The Sao Paulo Journal of Otorhinolaryngology was founded in January 1933. At the time, its Editors were focusing on putting aside “bitter criticism” that was given to them by publishing the article “regionalism act”. In the first years of the 1950's, the Journal was incorporated into the Brazilian Federation of the Societies of Otorhinolaryngology and Bronchoesophagology. As expected, it became a national journal, owing to its new and definitive denomination. It is curious (and maybe not a mere coincidence) that the journal we originally obtained our name from was founded in Recife in 1935, as the Journal of Anais Otorhinolaryngology - a scientific periodical of national circulation highly acclaimed by otorhinolaryngologists in Recife and in the Northeast of Brazil.

Since then, the Journal has made an upward curve and more recently – why not? – a sharp curve. It is not surprising that this publication has been coordinated by people such as: Mário Ottoni de Rezende, Homero Cordeiro, José Rezende Barbosa, Rudolph Lang, Arthur Kós, Fernando Portinho, Ricardo Bento, Paulo Pontes, Carlos Alberto Campos and Henrique Olival Costa (not to mention those who have actively assisted them, such as Nicanor Letti, Priscila Bogar, among others).

The Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology has adapted to global changes following various parameters regarding scientific publication. One of these changes is that periodicals have been steadily edited in a highly professional way. In addition, it has been easy to understand the journal scientific articles, which point out the level of scientific knowledge of researchers, graduate studies programs and universities. Furthermore, the considerable progress of BJORL not only reflects the ascension of Otorhinolaryngology as a medical specialty in Brazil, but also demonstrates great intellectual development in the country.

We need to highlight that we are undertaking the challenging task of coordinating ABORL-CCF Board of Publications when our Journal finds itself in the final stage of indexation by Medline. It is an outstanding merit to all individuals who have managed it so far, more specifically to Henrique Olival, who hands over the Journal among the top journals in the Brazilian Medical Publishing Houses. In addition, he provides us with an extremely workable and effective editorial management system, which has been recently implemented and might need few improvements to meet the long run needs of contributors.

It is necessary to index a journal in a database if we want to pursue visibility and prestige, as well as achieve national and international market penetration. Amongst all main databases for Brazilian publications, in order of importance, are: LILACS, SciELO, Medline and ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) that publish journals of major impact. Indexing in Medline and publishing editions in English are part of the last managements' accomplishments. These were decisive steps towards achieving our last goal, which is to increase our impact of 0.0512 points in the past three years, whereas a similar journal, called Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira, has 0.1401 points. Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, indexed in ISI, has an impact of 0.2022.

The qualification of a journal and its impact depend on its regularity, periodicity and scientific quality. This last criterion is directly related to original articles and case studies. In the case of BJORL, the above-mentioned criteria are very good, but they can be better. As the number of case studies submitted is great, they generate a major and restrained demand, which we have to find a solution for, without affecting the scientific quality. We find ourselves obliged to examine the relevance of facts and sometimes stop receiving these types of articles. We want to employ stricter methods to review and select articles, which will optimize the publishing time of the approved ones. We are going to provide space for those who wish to publish their case studies in our website. Case studies that have already been submitted will be treated as usual.

The improvement of our indicators is essential to achieve the highest categories of periodical classification of CAPES. This will help us to add more value to our articles, offer more places in graduate studies courses, raise funds, have more decisive influence in universities and university hospitals, and gain more respect to our specialty. This is the path. This is the main challenge presented to us. It is not less than what was faced by Sylvio Caldas (the real one, with a “y”) who, in Recife, driven by the same spirit that has motivated everyone from the BJORL History 70 years ago, founded, managed and gave financial support to Journal of Anais Otorhinolaryngology, using his own resources for three years. This editorial is dedicated to him and to this type of spirit.

The Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology supports the WHO's (World Health Organization) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors' (ICMJE) Clinical Assays' Registration Policies, as we acknowledge the importance of such measures for the international registration and disclosure of information on clinical assays, in an open access. Thus, as of 2007 we shall only accept for publication, those clinical research papers which have received an identification number from the Clinical Assays Registrations validated according to criteria established by the WHO and the ICMJE, and their web sites are available at http://www.icmje.org/. The identification number must be stated at the end of the abstract."

The Brazilian Association of Otorrinolaringology - ABORLCCF, founded on November 21, 1978 , is a civil society of scientific character, without lucrative aim, legitimate representative of the professional class of the otorrinolaringologists, that intends to promote the development of the specialty and the scientific, technician, cultural and social exchange among their professionals. It is linked to the Brazilian Medical Association.
