IMO Control and Management of Ships' Biofouling (to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species) 2012. International Maritime Organization - Published: February 2012

The introduction of harmful aquatic organisms to new environments by ships has been identified as a major threat to the world’s oceans and to the conservation of biodiversity. Biofouling, described as the undesirable accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae and animals on submerged structures (especially ships’ hulls), is considered one of the main vectors for bioinvasions.

These Guidelines for the control and management of ships’ biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species are intended to provide a globally consistent approach to the management of biofouling. They were adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee of IMO at its sixty-second session, from 11 to 15 July 2011, in the form of resolution MEPC.207(62) and are the result of three years of consultation between IMO Member States. The Guidelines represent a decisive step towards regulating the transfer of aquatic invasive species by ships.

ICD-10 International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (3 Volumes - Three Volumes) Version 4 -World Health Organization (WHO); ISBN 9789241548342 ; Hardback - Published 16 Jan 2012

WHO's International Classification of Diseases has been fully updated for the third time. Originally published in the early 1990s, this 10th edition (ICD-10) now incorporates all edits and updates up to the end of 2010. In addition, the numbering system has changed and now clearly indicates the year that the updates were incorporated.

The ICD is the international standard diagnostic classification for all general epidemiological purposes, many health management purposes and clinical use. These include analysis of the general health situation of population groups and monitoring the incidence and prevalence of diseases, as well as other health problems with respect to variables such as the characteristics and circumstances of the individuals affected, reimbursement, case-mix, resource allocation, quality, patient safety, and guidelines.

ICD is used for health information purposes in public health, primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. In particular, it is used to classify diseases, accidents, reasons for encounter, and other health problems recorded on many types of health and vital records including death certificates. In addition to facilitating the storage and retrieval of diagnostic information for clinical, epidemiological and quality purposes, the resulting records form the basis for compiling national mortality and morbidity statistics by WHO Member States. ICD serves as a language-independent framework for classification of diseases and has been translated into more than 40 languages.

Changes in this new edition include:

Volume 1 - extensive corrections for Lymphomas and Leukaemias in the neoplasms chapter, clarification and added details for some maternal conditions and various edits.

Volume 2 - clarification of definitions and rules around maternal cases, causes of pneumonia and extensive editing of the unchanged rules for coding neoplasms in causes of death.

Volume 3 - updated to reflect the new terms and changes in Volume 1.

Published annually by the International Institute for Labour Studies - the research arm of the ILO - the 2011 edition of “World of Work Report” shows that it will not be possible to recover successfully from the Great Recession unless social inequalities are addressed through well-designed policies.

The 'World of Work Report 2011' shows that it will not be possible to recover successfully from the Great Recession unless social inequalities are addressed through well-designed policies. Growing youth unemployment, income inequalities made worse as a result of rising food and oil prices, and other social inequities undermine support for pro-growth policies. They also entail a risk of social unrest which has started to materialize in the Arab region, some Asian countries and the Euro area. And they deprive the world economy from the kind of income growth that is needed in order to ensure sustainable economic recovery.

The report presents two scenarios for the next five years: under business-as-usual, the world economy will remain unstable, undermining employment prospects; by contrast, a strategy which addresses social inequalities adequately will support employment and sustain economic growth. Such a strategy is complex and faces implementation hurdles as some groups resist change; the report shows, however, that it can be achieved.
